Dear Gina Guinea Pig
Are grapes safe for guinea pigs? Our guinea pig likes grapes, but I stopped offering them when I heard they were toxic to dogs.
Gina Responds
I wish I could give you a straight answer, but the truth is that no one knows for sure.
In fact, veterinarians cannot yet explain why some dogs develop kidney failure after eating grapes or raisins.
I know of one guinea pig that ate seven grapes and became ill with what was thought to be kidney failure, although lab work wasn’t done to confirm the diagnosis.
If you decide to forego grapes, offer your guinea pig other fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in Vitamin C, like bell peppers, broccoli, spinach, kale, parsley, chickory and oranges.
